Abstract:
Polygon feature layer GIS dataset of United States Public Land Survey System (USPLSS) township grid of Wyandotte County, Kansas in ESRI shapefile format, datum NAD83, Kansas North State Plane coordinate system, and units US feet.
USPLSS is a legal land reference system created to enable the description of and transfer of property. This system is divided into townships, ranges, and sections. A township is an approximately 6-mile square area of land, containing 36 sections.
This layer is a representation of townships in the County but it was not developed to survey standards, and should not be used for surveying or land conveyance purposes-- except as an overview guide which only approximates townships and their boundaries and any subdivisions within them, such as sections (no location accuracy +/- claims are made).
Attribution includes township and range designations.
Also included are so-called State-ID (Kansas Uniform Parcel Number) assignments for county and township developed by Kansas Property Valuation Division, Cartography Section, to facilitate real property identification uniformly across the state. |

This township grid is intended to serve as a geographic display and analysis index layer to townships in Wyandotte County. It is not fit for survey-related or land parcel mapping purposes-- except as a basic visual guide to approximate possible locations of USPLSS townships. It is optimally utilized as an index grid at the county level and at small scale (1:36,000 or smaller).

Deemed complete and accurate for all attribution (but see note on State-ID below). State-ID assignments for GIS tax parcels within townships may in practice vary in some cases from township State-ID assignments in this dataset.
Polygon topology present, each feature poly has unique feature ID. Boundaries are coincident with corresponding boundaries of quarter-section lines and section lines in other layers maintained by GSS. Fractional sections are present (in conformance with USPLSS). Section polygon boundaries on county border are truncated by county border.
All townships in Wyandotte Co. are represented.
No quantitative assessment of positional accuracy has been made nor are any claims made. Placement and configuration of townships is approximate only-- not survey accurate. Topological relationship of township polys to each other is good.
These base maps provided accurate topographic and planimetric detail to aid in placement of township boundaries, primarily through manuscript match lines (tic marks) at quarter section edges (for construction of section and quarter-section polys). These maps also contained cadastral info (property ownership information)
Tax parcels GIS layer furnished land parcels as references to section and quarter-section placement, which in turn aided construction of township polygons.
Section GIS layer provided foundation for building township layer, as prime eference material.
Spatial accuracy of boundaries was improved through revisions based on research and comparison of section lines with other reference sources. This revision work was done to clean up coincident linework with quarter-sections and section layers. This was a visual process involving heads up editing environment using street centerlines layer, tax parcel layer, subdivision plats, engineering maps, rivers layers, and ortho aerial photography as referential guides.
Layer table was strengthened through standardization and expansion of attribution data. Consistency in table column names between this and other layer tables (quarter-sections and sections) was effected. Attributes from Kansas PVD State-ID data was added to layer records, with State-ID information from tax parcel layer (parcel_att_py) as basis. No feature digitizing was done.
