Zoning dataset is updated regularly and published on an irregular schedule. The zoning ordinance has three principal elements: the official zoning map, the schedule of district regulations, and the text of the zoning ordinance. The zoning map shows the boundaries of the districts, while the schedule of district regulations sets forth the permitted uses, standards, and requirements for each individual district. The text of the ordinance deals largely with the procedural, administrative, and legal matters and with definitions of terms in the zoning ordinance.

Zoning districts of Kansas City, KS, published as an ESRI shapefile (.shp) format, polygon feature layer, in US feet units in Kansas North State Plane coordinate system, NAD 83 datum. This dataset is a digital version of the Official Zoning Map, which is maintained as physical maps in the offices of Unified Government Urban Planning and Land Use department. Please note that this GIS digital version is not considered the Official Zoning Map of Kansas City, KS.Two files should accompany this GIS dataset:1) a "layer file" (for symbolizing zoning polygons) called Zoning_Poly.lyr, to be used in ArcGIS software, and2) a table of zoning district categories and their codes (called ZONING_DISTRICT_NAMES).

This dataset serves as a digital version in GIS format of the Official Zoning Map of Kansas City, KS. It is suitable for spatial display and analysis of city zoning using appropriate computer software. However, it is not to be misconstrued as the "Official Zoning Map". The official zoning map resides in Urban Planning and Land Use Department as a collection of physical map manuscripts and related documents. Zoning is the prime tool for implementing the Kansas City KS Comprehensive Plan. By controlling land uses and setting development standards throughout the city, zoning can guide development. Zoning also sets standards for long developed areas and can be a very helpful neighborhood preservation tool. Zoning standards for building setbacks, building height, parking, screening, permitted activities, etc. help to ensure that people do not have costs imposed upon them by their neighbors. Zoning makes it possible to create transitional land use patterns so that incompatible uses are separated and buffered and harsh face-to-face relationships are avoided. Zoning is also utilized to protect development from flooding and to assure safe and adequate traffic flow.
